Walking with Dad

I have been bereaved by suicide twice in my lifetime. First at just eight years old, when my aunty, 'AJ' was taken from us. This was a significant loss at such a young age. Now, at 21, my life has been altered forever by the loss of my Dad, Matt, only six weeks ago. He was the most vibrant person I have known and we never would have expected to be missing him so soon. I have no doubt that this is the most profound experience of my life so far and its effects are only just beginning to be felt. 

Mental health and suicide prevention are causes that have become very dear to my heart. It weighs heavy on my soul to know that 65,000 Australians attempt to take their lives each year. 65,000 people fighting the fight my Dad did and 65,000 families and communities suffering alongside mine. It is almost inconceivable to imagine how widespread the effects of suicide really are. 

I am receiving generous support during this time, and I would love the opportunity to give back. Please help me to provide resources to individuals and families like mine who are struggling. I aim to walk at least 20kms over one week with the goal of raising $500 for this cause. I am also sharing my story in the hopes of spreading awareness. I believe this event is happening at this time in my life for a reason, for the opportunity to make even a small difference, and I couldn't do it without you. This is for AJ, for Dad and for the 65,000 and their communities who need us. Thank you.

This milestone is beyond what I ever imagined we could reach, especially in only around 30 hours. I'm speechless.
Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to leaving this legacy for my Dad. It chokes me up to know that we are contributing to saving lives like his. I know it would touch him too.

Lily I am forever & always beyond proud of you and the lengths you've gone to, both in achieving such an incredible milestone for your Dad + in moving forward with your life. These things that happen to us are unbearable, but life goes on and you've managed to keep moving with it one step at a time. You've always been an inspirational figure in my life since we were kids, and I can't help but feel so emotionally moved and empowered by seeing you accomplish these great feats.
